From “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini - (other books – “Thousand Splendid Suns” – “ Portraits”). Khaled is Afghan by birth/born 1965 – now in America working as a physician.

“When Khaled was in infants class at school a Mullah came to teach them about Islam – hadj – zakat – 5 daily namaz prayers – written in Arabic – no translation – the words had to be pronounced correctly so that God could hear better ! Drinking alcohol being a terrible sin would have to be answered for on judgement day. Afghans did drink alcohol – in private, bought Scotch as a medicine from a pharmacy as medication.

When Khaled related the Mullahs words to his father – saying he was a wealthy businessman sinner – his father said “ You will never learn anything of value from bearded idiots – self righteous monkeys.  They do nothing but thumb their prayer beads and recite words written in a book they don’t even understand. God help us all if Afghanistan ever falls into their hands.

When Khaled said the Mullah seems nice – his father replied, “So did Genghis Khan!  His father went on to say – no matter what the Mullah teaches – there is only one sin - ONLY one – THEFT – every other sin is a variation of theft.  When you kill a man, you steal a life, you steal his wife’s right to a husband, rob his children of a father – when you steal someone’s right to the truth – when you cheat – you steal the right to fairness.  When you use knowing someone to get you employment, you steal from somebody who has worked and earned that place and so on – there is no act more wretched than stealing.”
